Official study title

Effectiveness of physical therapy associated to cognitive training in the improvement of non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson´s disease: randomized clinical trial

Short title used by the registry

Benefits of physical therapy and cognitive training in the non-motor symptoms (sleep and cognition) in patients with Parkinson's disease

Original description

Intervention: The sample will be composed of individuals with Parkinson's disease, divided into two groups: physical therapy group (n=22) and physical therapy + cognitive group (n=24). The physical therapy intervention program will be based on Bobath concept which will include exercises to achieve the following physiotherapy goals: stimulate neuromotor recruitment, stimulate balance, stimulate functional independence and activities of daily living, improve the gait, minimize the occurrence and/or fear of falling and the freezing, improve sleep quality, improve quality of life. Therapies will last 60 minutes, with a frequency of 2 times a week in a total of 32 therapies, following gradual evolution in the complexity of the exercises. The physiotherapy + cognitive group will receive beyond the physical therapy protocol described above, therapies to promote training of cognitive-perceptual system with cognitive exercises including memory activities, attention, cognitive processing, calculation, concentration, spatial orientation, executive skills, language, evocation, among others, lasting 30 minutes after the completion of the motor training.;Other;G11.427.690;E01.370.600.250;F02.463.188;E02.779 Primary outcome: 1) Improvement of sleep quality assessed pre and post intervention through the following instruments: sleep diary, actigraphy, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), Parkinson's disease sleep scale (PDSS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale Secondary outcome: 1) Improve quality of life assessed pre and post intervention by Parkinson's disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39) and Parkinson´s Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (PDQL).;2) Improvement of depression assessed pre and post intervention by the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15).;3) Improvement in functional independence (clinical signs and symptoms) verified pre and post intervention by the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale: - item II - daily activities (score 0-52 points) and the item III - motor (score of 0 - 108 points).;4) Improvement of the fear of falling verified pre and post intervention by the Falls Efficacy Scale International (FES-I).;5) Improvement of balance verified pre and post intervention by the Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest).;6) Improve gait verified by video analysis for speed variables (meters/second), total distance time (seconds) and gait cadence (steps/second) and foot print test for the variables step, stride length and base support (cm) between the pre and post intervention analysis.;7) Improvement of cognitive function assessed pre and post intervention through the following instruments: Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), cognitive and perceptual evaluation through figures, Trail Making Test, clock drawing executive test, verbal fluency test, Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning test (RAVLT).
