Abstract Introduction: The interest in neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) has been steadily growing. The most common neuropsychiatric symptoms are depression and anxiety. Patients with PD also suffer from stress and a lower quality of life. A comprehensive treatment of these patients requires a proper assessment of the neuropsychiatric symptoms as well as an appropriate treatment that includes these symptoms in the therapy. The developed inventory in Martinez-Martin’s Short Scale for Evaluation of neuropsychiatric disorders in Parkinson’s disease (SEND-PD) assesses the neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with PD. The instrument has not yet been translated into German and sufficiently validated. Concerning the treatment of patients with PD, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has proven to be one of the most efficient therapies. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse if there are neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with PD, the influence of those symptoms on their quality of life and if CBT has a positive impact on both the symptoms and the patients’ quality of life. Method: Studies that examined a CBT with patients with PD were sorted out and described in the Review article. The implemented studies contained patients who had an appointment for a random clinical examination, patients that had participated in a previous study and patients that specifically wanted to participate in study 1. Patients of the study 1 were allocated to an intervention group, which received a CBT, or a control group with no specific treatment. Demographic variables and size of the group did not differ. To assess neuropsychiatric symptoms, the SEND-PD was translated into German (Checkliste zur Erfassung neuropsychiatrischer Storungen bei Parkinsonerkrankung (CENS-PE)) and analysed according to psychometric criteria. Results: With respect to the treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with PD, ten studies were found that examined a CBT in patients with PD who were diagnosed with anxiety and depression. These studies showed a positive effect on the symptoms after the treatment. Moreover, the complemented study shows a positive influence of the group CBT concerning stress and quality of life. The translated inventory Checkliste zur Erfassung neuropsychiatrischer Storungen bei Parkinsonerkrankung (CENS-PE) generally shows sufficient psychometric criteria. Conclusion: The German version of the CENS-PE is a reliable and valid instrument to assess neuropsychiatric symptoms and can therefore be applied. These symptoms can be positively influenced by a CBT. The group CBT is an effective setting and form of treatment and has a positive impact on stress and quality of life.
