Original abstract

The aim of the present study was to assess physical activity and dietary habits in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), as well as in their caregivers. Given that this specific neurodegenerative disorder significantly affects the mobility, autonomy, and overall well-being of patients; while simultaneously imposing a severe physical and mental burden on caregivers, the study focused on the role of lifestyle as a means of managing quality of life. The research was conducted during the period of May-June 2025 on a sample of 26 participants (20 patients and 6 caregivers). Data collection was carried out using validated scales for physical activity (IPAQ), non-motor symptoms (NMSQ), and food frequency (FFQ), combined with the recording of anthropometric characteristics. The results revealed that lifestyle critically affects the clinical presentation. Specifically, coffee consumption appeared to act beneficially, being associated with milder non-motor symptoms. Furthermore, physical exercise functioned as a strong protective factor, showing a positive effect on domains such as the gastrointestinal and urinary systems. Of particular importance is the conclusion that exercise intensity is more directly correlated with milder symptomatology compared to the simple duration of activity, which, however, appeared to offer protection in the cardiovascular domain. In conclusion, the intensity of physical activity and dietary choices constitute critical regulators in disease progression, highlighting the need for designing personalized exercise and nutritional interventions.
