Original abstract

Author: Alice Tounitski Title in English: Light therapy interventions in neurodegenerative diseases Title in Lithuanian: Šviesos terapijos pritaikymas sergant neurodegeneracinėmis ligomis Aim: To scope a review and analyze existing literature on light therapy interventions in neurodegenerative diseases, and the implications on future directions. Objectives: 1. Conduct a thorough review of published studies, clinical trials, and meta-analyses related to light therapy interventions in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, atypical parkinsonism and motor neuron disease. 2. Evaluate the methodologies employed in the reviewed studies, including the type of light therapy used, duration, intensity, and outcome measures. 3. Discuss the implications of the reviewed literature for clinical practice and propose recommendations for future research in the field of light therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. Methodology: Standard literature review methodology was followed to select and extract data from different studies done on light therapy interventions in neurodegenerative diseases. Electronic databases PubMed, up to date, were searched for a wide range of keywords including ‘light therapy’, ‘neurodegenerative’, ‘Alzheimer’, 'Parkinson', in last 10 years, up to January 2025. 4038 articles were identified in the initial assessment. Duplicates were removed, title and abstract screened and 68 articles were selected. Full text of potentially relevant articles was assessed against the eligibility criteria and 42 articles were selected for the review. Results: The review revealed that photobiomodulation and bright light therapy showed promising effects in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, including improved cognitive, motor, and behavioral symptoms. Preclinical and clinical studies highlighted its role in enhancing mitochondrial function, reducing oxidative stress, and modulating neuroinflammation. However, evidence in atypical parkinsonism and motor neuron disease remains limited and inconclusive. Conclusions: This scoping review revealed that light therapy, particularly photobiomodulation and bright light therapy, presents a promising non-pharmacological intervention for neurodegenerative diseases. Evidence suggests clinically meaningful improvements in cognitive, motor, and behavioral symptoms, especially in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, alongside modulation of core pathological mechanisms such as mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Pavadinimas: Šviesos terapijos pritaikymas sergant neurodegeneracinėmis ligomis Tikslas: Apžvelgti ir išanalizuoti literatūros duomenis apie šviesos terapijos intervencijas neurodegeneracinėms ligoms. Uždaviniai: 1. Apžvelgti publikuotų mokslinių studijų, klinikinių tyrimų ir meta-analizių duomenis apie šviesos terapijos intervencijas nerodegeneracinėms ligoms, tokioms kaip Alzheimerio liga, Parkinsono liga, atipinio parkinsonizmo sindromai ir motorinio neurono liga. 2. Išanalizuoti apžvelgtose studijose taikytų šviesos terapijos intervencijų pobūdį, trukmę, intensyvumą ir efekto vertinimo rodiklius. 3. Aptarti apžvelgtų intervencijų klinikinio pritaikymo galimybes ir ateities perspektyvas. Metodai: Atlikta detali literatūros, publikuotos per paskutinius 10 metų, imtinai iki 2025 metų sausio mėnesio, apžvalga apie šviesos terapijos taikymą neurodegeneracinėms ligoms. Duomenis rinkti elektroninėse duomenų bazėse PubMed ir Up to date taikant raktažodžius „šviesos terapija“, „nerodegeneracinė“, „Alzheimerio“, „Parkinsono“.
