Original abstract

The problem is not poor execution, it is estimates built from your best week ever rather than from the average week you actually live. Feeling behind despite an optimized system is not a signal that the system is wrong, it is a signal that the estimates were wrong; the planning fallacy (Kahneman & Tversky 1979, validated by Buehler et al. 1994) shows that people systematically underestimate task duration even knowing their past tasks took longer; Parkinson adds the complementary edge: the extra time granted will be filled; the answer is not further optimization but honest estimation and a scope smaller than the one that feels comfortable to commit to. Audiences: hard workers who keep missing targets despite genuine effort — Working more than enough, systems running, but at month's end there is always a gap between the plan and the result, and no obvious explanation operators who consistently set more goals than they can complete — Quarterly targets built on the assumption that every week will run like the best week, which never happens readers who have optimized everything and still feel behind — All the systems are improved, all the habits are built, and still behind; there is a sense that the problem is personal, not structural Note: written from Indonesian operator context.
