Original abstract

Since several years Neurofeedback has been used successfully to treat various symptoms and disorders, such as ADHD and Parkinson's Disease. During neurofeedback people learn to voluntarily control their brain activity responding to a feedback on their cortical activity given by a computer. Another possible application for the use of neurofeedback-training is the treatment of dysphagia. Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that can have multiple causes including neurological. It is found that the negative slow cortical potentials (SCPs), that precede motor actions like swallowing, are reduced in patients with dysphagia. To examine the possible use of neurofeedback for the treatment of dysphagia, the influence of neurofeedback-training on swallowing and the underlying slow cortical potentials was investigated in the present study. It is assumed that a neurofeedback-training in which people have to negativate their SCPs leads to a greater negativity of these SCPs also during swallowing. 10 neurologically healthy elderly people completed 10 neurofeedback-sessions with the goal to negativate their cortical acticity. Another 10 people had the task to rain the positivation of their SCPs. The results showed that the neurofeedback-training did not lead to a stronger negativity in swallowing. Nevertheless, the treatment of dysphagia using neurofeedback-training has a potential that should be further investigated. It would be important to test such a training in the clinical field. Also, a higher number of training sessions could lead to measurable results.
