Original abstract

Preoperative assessment must emphasise a complete knowledge of existing permanent medication. Whether an existing permanent medication should be continued during surgery or any therapy should be preoperatively initiated must be determined before surgery both critically and individually. A relevant indication is given by a joint paper released by the German Societies of Anesthesiology and Intensive Medicine, Surgery and Internal Medicine. Basing on update data they recommend the use of pharmaceuticals that act on the circulation as well as of antidiabetics, statins, vitamin K antagonists, thrombocyte aggregation inhibitors, psychopharmaceuticals, anti-Parkinson drugs and corticosteroids.
