Original abstract

Early in the course of Parkinson's disease (PD), many patients experience a social and professional decline. Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is a highly effective surgical approach for improvement of motor symptoms and quality of life. However, when STN-DBS is considered a therapeutic option, majority of patients are in an advanced PD stage and show already severe psychosocial dysfunction. There is growing evidence that STN-DBS may not reverse social malfunctioning in patients with progressive PD. Therefore, a multicentre international study (EARLYSTIM) will examine whether patients benefit from STN-DBS at an earlier PD stage with respect to their social situation.
