Original abstract
AIMS: The aim of this study was to explore the strategies utilized by working adults to maintain health and well-being within the context of informal caregiving of a family member with Parkinson's Disease. METHODS: Forty semi-structured interviews were between September 2021-2022, transcribed, and analyzed in ATLAS.ti. An adaptation of the Work-Life Conflict model guided the study. RESULTS: The sample was 78 % female (mean age 58, SD 14). Most participants were older and in their job positions for a long time and engaged and adapted health promoting practices to fit within the context of caregiving demands. Three sub-themes were: maintaining caregiver health, work as enjoyment and a break from caregiving and underutilization of worker wellness programs. CONCLUSIONS: Balancing caregiving and working is challenging. Older caregivers reported work as integral to their well-being and want to remain part of the workforce. Findings may inform future development of interventions to improve the health of these family caregivers.
