OBJECTIVE: To determine effect and safety of ultra-low frequency and high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on treating vascular Parkinson's syndrome (VPS) after stroke. METHODS: The 0.1 Hz low frequency (n=21) and 5 Hz high frequency (n=21) rTMS were used to treat patients with VPS, and the false stimulation servered as a control group (n=18). The UPDRS score and Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ) were chosen to evaluate the curative effect on PD. The patients were given anti-PD drugs continuously during the treatment. RESULTS: UPDRS scores as well as I, II, and III scores after the treatment were significantly decreased in both the ultra-low frequency group and the high frequency group compared with those before the treatment (all P<0.05). The scores at the third month after the treatment were still lower than those before the treatment (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the ultra-low frequency and the high frequency group at the same time point before and after the treatment (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in UPDRS scores between before and after the treatment in the control group (P>0.05), but PDQ scores were significantly decreased at the third month after the treatment compared with those of before and after treatment (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The low frequency and high frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation can safely improve the clinical symptoms and life quality of patients with VPS.
